Practical information

Things you knew, did not know, wish you knew or did not know that you wanted to know! Where, what you should bring, and travelinformation for Bremanger.

How to get there

From the West

Approaching from the west, from for example Kalvåg or Oldeide, and driving in-fjord, you follow Fylkesveg 616 to Rugsund and Svelgen. Then take a left at the last intersection before the Skatestraumstunnel, to Hunskår and the “Hornelen” sign. Then you just follow the road straigth ahead until you end up on the parkinglot by Basecamp Hornelen.

From the East

If you are coming from the east heading westaward towards the ocean, follow Fylkesveg 616 to Bremanger, Oldeide, Kalvåg and Måløy. Directly after the Skatestraumstunnel, tak the first right, towards Hunskår and the “Hornelen” sign. Watch out, this intersection is coming up fast after the tunnel, so hold on to your britches! Follow the road until it ends up in the parking lot of Basecamp Hornelen.

Far, far away

From Bergen, the expressboat from Strandkaiterminalenis the best option, to Smørhamn, Leirgulen or Måløy. There are also busses connecting you to Nordfjord.
From Oslo, Nordfjordekspressen to Nordfjordeid or Måløy are good options.
You can also fly to Anda or Florø Airport. Alternate transportation methods are sea planes, hot air balloons, sailing boat, hitchhiking or on horseback. Thruth be told, we don’t care how you get here, as long as you come!

How to pack for your adventure

Ready for adventure? Here is what you should pack:

  • Small backpack 25-30l
  • A big lunch, energy bars and lots of water (min. 1.5l for the full day trip)
  • Hiking pants and shell jacket, isolation jacket for breaks. Other clothes depending on weather conditions
  • Hat/cap
  • Gloves
  • Hiking boots (sturdy, stiff, preferably with vibram sole)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (depending on weather)

If rain and lower temperatures are forecasted, please also bring:

  • Woolen base layer (do not use cotton)
  • Extra socks
  • Warm mid-layer
  • Waterproof pants

Optional:

  • Foldable hikingpoles
  • Camera (needs to have a strap!)

Please also ensure that you leave enough space in your backpack for the Via Ferrata equipment.

Gloves

You can use leather gloves (with or without fingers) or rubber gloves. These can be bought at the base. Make sure that the gloves have a tight fit!

The right hiking boots

The terrain you will be hiking and climbing in includes big rock fields, slippy rocks, wet ground, crossing streams and hiking steeply up or down. You want to have a sturdy, waterproof boot that gives good foot and ankle stability.

We recommend mid or high cut hiking boots minimum category B with a relatively stiff sole (see examples of suitable shoes below). Make sure to test your shoes and “walk them in” before endeavouring on a big adventure like this one could be!

It is allowed to wear low ankle hiking boots as well.

No jogging shoes, flip-flops, sandals or shoes without sole-grip.

Weather

Conditions in the mountains can be unpredictable and change fast. Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role. Also think about the effects of sun, rain and snow conditions. Climbing the Via Ferrata, we usually move slower than if we hike, it is therefore a bigger challenge to stay warm during cold and wet days – especially on the hands. Every person’s perception is different, so make sure you bring clothes according to your personal needs.

A general thumb rule is: check the weather forecast, prepare for the worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be taken on and off.

We do not cancel trips because of bad weather. The only times we cancel is when bad weather becomes dangerous weather. On Hornelen Via Ferrata this can be powerful winds, lightning and thunder or icy conditions. We will inform you when cancelling. Please read our terms and conditions for more information.
